What Is A Sex (Toy) Blog?
There’s a blog about everything out there, so why not have a sex blog discussing a topic damn near everyone has done and is interested in?
For some bloggers, the “adult nature” of such a blog may be a turn-off, but for those who understand the power a blog has to reach millions of people;
It makes sense to have one (if that’s what you want to do).
There are plenty, and I do mean plenty of sex/adult-themed blogs out there but there’s definitely room for more.
If you do a bit of research, you will see that most sex blogs are mostly porn-ish looking sites which are not that interesting to read (albeit some are interested to watch) which means;
If you have something to share related to sex, becoming a sex blogger is something that you may want to look into.
Down below I’m going to give you a step-by-step (detail) guide on how to start a sex blog but before we do that, you must pick a domain name,
A domain name (such as sextoystarterpack.com) would be your address on the internet and yes, you are going to need one to get started.
Perhaps you already have some experience with blogging, in which case you should know finding a great domain name for your blog can be challenging.
“Most ‘good domains are taken”, they say.
Nah… you just need to get a bit creative.
To help you get in the mood for some research, here are some…
Sex Blog Name Ideas (With Available Domains)
- YourPenNameSexToys.com
- YourPenNameSexBlog.com
- YourPenNameSexTips.com
Using your *pen* name as a modifier in your domain name should guarantee that you find a domain you like.
There are a lot of “verticals’ within the sex/adult niche so get creative (this, of course, comes down to what you’d like to blog about).
NB: You don’t have to use a pen name, but I suggest you do (more on this below).
I also decided to do some digging for you and find some currently available sex-related domain names which you may also find interesting.
The following are all available at the time of writing, but I can’t guarantee they still will be when you’re reading this.
If there’s one you’d like to make yours, make sure you go ahead and register it today (I will show you how soon).
- sexsolar.com
- sexstrategies.com
- sexmarine.com
- naughtythinking.com
Those were just some ideas, but the possibilities are endless if you have a few minutes to do some research. Unfortunately, I don’t as there’s a lot to cover down below but as I said;
Once you found that perfect domain you love, do not waste a minute on registering it for yourself.
I’ve missed out on many domain names myself just because I wanted to “leave it for later” only to come back and find that it’s gone.
How to Register A Domain Name
Registering a domain name is both easy and cheap.
Myself, I like to use BlueHost as they give you a free domain with every hosting plan you get (we’ll talk about hosting down below).
If you have a domain name at the ready before you move on to my step-by-step guide to setting up your sex blog, make sure you visit BlueHost and register it right now.
All it costs is $3.95 a month and as I said; you get to register your domain for free (+ other unique benefits).
NB: BlueHost does not allow “porn blogging”, but there are no restrictions on publishing adult0friendly sex toy reviews.
A Step-By-Step Guide On How To Build A Sex Blog (From Scratch)
Now that you have your domain name at the ready, let me walk you through what you should do to get your website up and ready for action;
Step 01: Pick a Niche In The Sex Toy Industry
You need to pick a “theme” (often referred to as a niche amongst bloggers) which you are going to write about.
For example, the theme for this website is “sex toy reviews”, but as you can see, that’s not all I write about.
& neither should you.
There are many many themes you can write about, for example;
- Sex tips for long-distance relationships
- How to increase intimacy in a marriage
- How to deal with ED
- How to become a sex worker
Sex is a vastly robust topic and there are a lot of angles you can use to start your sex blog.
As I said, just because you have a “theme” in mind, doesn’t mean you need to be stuck to that one theme forever.
Step 02: Get A Domain
We’ve covered this step already, but if you haven’t yet picked a domain name for your new blog;
Start by first seeing available domains in your chosen niche and then research accordingly.
Again, once you find a domain name; register it asap!
Even if you don’t plan on using it soon, the $3.95 fee is well worth the expense (you don’t want to make big plans for a domain name which someone else registers before you).
Step 03: Use WordPress
Let’s get technical for a minute here.
There are many platforms you can use to blog on, however;
WordPress is the best one.
It’s super easy to set up, manage and run and just about every website you’ve visited today runs on WordPress.
If you got your domain name from BlueHost as I’ve suggested above, then you also get a free one-click WordPress installation with your free domain.
Step 04: Install A WordPress Theme
“Out of the box” WordPress sites come with a default theme that’s already installed.
The good news is; you can change it and there are millions of free (and paid) themes you can choose from.
What is a WordPress theme?
In a nutshell, it’s how your site looks.
As I said, there are both free and paid options out there to choose from.
One tip I can give you here is to pick a simple theme. You really don’t need much!
In fact; the simpler, the better!
This website is using the GeneratePress theme (which is free but with limited features). You can check it out here if you’re interested.
Step 05: Set Up Google Analytics
I am sure you’re looking to start a sex blog with the hopes of having it read by people – right?
People can still visit your website, but without having Google Analytics installed, you are not going to know who is coming and how many people are coming.
For this, we use Google Analytics which is a free tool from Google that you can sign up for here.
(You are going to need a website before you do this step though so make sure you do step 1-4 before setting up your Analytics).
As a helpful reference, here’s a quick tutorial on how to set up Google Analytics on your (sex) blog:
Step 06: Start Blogging!
The last step (that you need to keep doing “forever”) is to start blogging.
Your blog has now been set up, and you’re ready to start publishing articles, guides, how-to tips and whatever you want on the website.
Down below I will give you some additional tips about blog writing but don’t let the “act of writing” intimidate you.
If you know what you’re doing, and you know what you’re talking about;
Creative writing can actually be fun, it will help you “empty” your ideas on to “paper” and you will start building out your blog in preparation for the readers that will be coming soon.
The hardest part about blogging is getting traffic (getting people to your blog) and it’s actually where many bloggers end up giving up.
I don’t want you to give up – thus;
I have prepared some tips for you on;
How To Get Your Blog Found (& Read)
There are many ways you can get traffic to your blog, however;
I am going to share with you 6 go-to methods as they are considered to be the best traffic sources you can get.
Search Engines (Google)
The best traffic you can get is from Google.
This means getting your content onto Google’s first page and people finding you that way and coming to your blog.
How do you do this?
You can check out this SEO guide for beginners here as it will give you all the things you need to know and do to get your website ready for SEO.
SEO is what I mostly focus on for this blog and as you can see, it’s going quite well.
While SEO is not fast to get (it usually takes Google 6-8 months to rank you on the first page) it makes up for it in the “quality” of the visitors you attract.
Guest Blogging on Sex-Related Blogs
Another good idea to get some quick traffic (& also help your blog can found sooner by Google) is to guest post on sex/adult-themed blogs.
This will help you flex your writing skills and it will also help you reach readers other blogs may have.
There’s a great beginner’s guide to guest blogging for you here, and it will also show you how to find guest posting opportunities.
I’ve also curated a list of some major sex/relationship blogs that are currently looking for guest bloggers for you here:
Adult Forums
One other way to start getting traffic is to find adult-themed forums, joining as a member, and being an active member of the community.
I won’t go into much detail about this as I have never done this method myself, but you can find a list of adult-themed forums here.
Email Marketing
Any “blogging guide” out there will tell you about the importance of building an email list for your blog, and the same goes for sex bloggers.
Building a list simply means “collecting emails‘ from readers who visit your blog in exchange for something else (often an ebook).
This will help build your “core-audience” which you can then email anytime you publish new articles on your blog and/or want to send a promotion of some sort.
Twitter Profile
Twitter is probably the most adult-content-friendly social media platform out there, and yes; they do allow sex bloggers to publish their content on the platform.
If you have the time for it, setting up a Twitter profile for your sex blog will be a good idea but just like any other social network;
In order to make it worth your time, you actually have to spend time engaging on the platform. You just can’t publish your blog links and hope for the best.
If that’s your plan for Twitter, it’s best to avoid it until you have more time to dedicate to it.
Bonus: Pinterest (Risky, But Worth A Shot)
Pinterest is weird when it comes to adult content, but given how quickly a pin can go viral on Pinterest, you’d do well in publishing some of your content on there.
I’d avoid publishing any sort of nudity or vulgarity on Pinterest as that would quickly get you banned. However, there are sex bloggers who have managed to stay in Pinterest’s safe zone:
How To Make Money With Your Sex Blog
Let’s talk about the exciting part and that is; making money from your sex blogging!
- Is it possible?
- Can it be done?
- How much money can you make?
YES. YES & A LOT!
Here’s how…
Sex/Adult Themed Affiliate Programs
Affiliate marketing is how most sex bloggers make their money since ad networks are not very adult-friendly.
Basically, an affiliate program allows you to make money by recommending products to readers and then you make a commission off each sale.
For example;
Let’s say you sell an “intimacy course” that sells for $100 and you make 30% off each sale;
You will be making $30 off each sale you refer to that course.
Make a sale a day, and you’re looking at ~$900 in earnings (& that’s just from one product). The good news is;
There’s no limit to how many products you can recommend or how many products you sell. The sky is the limit.
The only thing that will limit your earnings is your traffic so make sure you follow my traffic-tips above to be able to turn your sex blog into a moneymaker!
Sponsored Posts
One other way you can make money with your blog is through sponsored posts.
This means companies paying you to mention their products on your blog in exchange for a small (or big) fee.
how much you charge depends on what they want and what your traffic numbers are like so I can’t give you much advice about this, however;
When you do start accepting sponsored posts, make sure you mention that you are being paid to promote a product. Failure to do so can (and probably will) get you in the trouble.
10 Things To Keep In Mind As A Sex Blogger
Before I close off this guide, I also want to share with you a few tips on what you need to keep in mind as a sex blogger to make sure that your new endeavor will be a fun and successful venture.
Here goes…
Write Under A Pen Name (It’s Not A Must)
Plenty of paragraphs ago, I told you to pick a domain name with a pen name (not your real name). This is not a must, but it’s ideal in my opinion given the sensitive nature of the topic at hand. You can get some pen-name ideas here.
It Takes Time To Be Found
Don’t give up on your blog too soon. It takes a few months to get the ball rolling and it takes a few more months to start making money with your blog. Just keep at it and treat it as a hobby.
It Takes Time To Make Money
If your aim is to make money with your blog, don’t expect to start today and make money tomorrow. It just doesn’t work that way. As I’ve just said; it will take time to get the traffic you need to make any sort of income worth mentioning.
Use Visuals To Enhance Readership
I do a lot of research on sex blogs when I’m researching new content for this website. Most of them are boring, dull and provoke no reaction. I like to drop some “eye-catching visuals” in my content to keep the reader on edge.
Keep Learning About “Blogging”
Blogging is an art form and the “ideal way of doing things” will keep changing for as long as blogs are still a thing. If you want to make this a successful venture, make sure you spend some time learning about blogging. There are many “blogs on blogging” out there so find one you like, and read what they have to say.
Treat It Like A Business (Or Not)
If you want to make money with your blog, treat it like a business. Understand that any sort of business has expenses so do not be afraid to invest back into your business when the need comes.
You Don’t Have To Be A “Great” Writer
One drawback which holds many beginner bloggers back is the fact they do not feel like great writers. It’s OK. Nobody is expecting some mind-blowing piece of journalism here. People want to hear your story and it doesn’t have to be a perfectly written story.
You Will Get Better At Blogging
Scared of writing? Start writing. With time, you will get better. Just trust me on this one!
The Ideal Lenght of Blog Posts Should Be…
How long should your blog posts be? Ideally, you want to aim for 1000 to 15000 words. This will give you enough space to get your point across without it becoming too boring.
Building A Community Is A Good Idea
A strong community around your blog with people coming to read what you have to say is where you should aim for with this blogging thing. If you can do that, then I am sure you will be able to make your sex blog your full-time income in no time.
Is (Sex) Blogging For You?
Answer the following 3 questions to find out.
Are You Interested In The Topic?
You don’t have to be an expert on the topic to maintain a blog. If you genuinely enjoy it and you find it interesting; that’s all the requirements you need.
Are You Over 18 Years Old?
This is important. You need to be 18 years or older because of the “adult” nature of this niche, and;
You also need to be 18+ for you to be able to make money with your blog (unless you want to ask your parents/guardian to help you out and give you their permission).
Are You Up For It?
If becoming a sex blogger something you just want to do; go do it.
Hopefully, this guide has given you a few ideas on how you can make it happen.
